Why Brennan Johnson was missing from Wales squad on Monday

Some Tottenham Hotspur fans may have been left wondering why Brennan Johnson had no part to play in Wales’ match against Montenegro.

Johnson is in the form of his life at the moment, having scored a remarkable seven goals in his last seven games for club and country.

The latest of those came in Wales’ 2-2 draw against Iceland on Friday evening in a game where the Tottenham man was brought off at half-time with his country leading 2-0.

The winger had put Wales ahead in Reykjavik when he tapped home from close range after the goalkeeper managed to get his hand to Harry Wilson’s initial effort, only for a spirited second half from the home side to see both sides share the points.

Why did Brennan Johnson not play against Montenegro?

Johnson’s unavailability for the clash against Montenegro at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday night was not directly a result of him having to be replaced against Iceland.

Instead, the 23-year-old sat out the UEFA Nations League match in the Welsh capital as a result of the booking he picked up in the first half against Iceland, his second of the competition which comes with a one-match ban.

What we know about Brennan Johnson’s fitness

Wales boss Craig Bellamy revealed after the Iceland game that Johnson was taken off at the interval as a ‘precaution’ (Sky Sports) and did not elaborate any further.

Johnson has featured in every one of Tottenham’s ten matches across all competitions this season and fans will likely now have to wait until Ange Postecoglou addresses the media at Hotspur Way on Friday for a further update on his availability.

Who could replace Brennan Johnson against West Ham?

If Johnson is ruled out of Saturday’s Premier League match against West Ham United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium it would represent a huge blow for Spurs considering his prolific run of form.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou would have to weigh up whether he would want to move Dejan Kulusevski back to the right-hand side of his front three, when in fact the Swede has looked far more dangerous in a more central role this season.

Realistically, that would be the most likely option with Heung-min Son potentially coming back into the side on the left following his hamstring issues, with Dominic Solanke down the middle.

If Kulusevski is pushed forward, it could allow Archie Gray to come into the starting eleven on the right of midfield.
