Tottenham’s George Abbott is thriving in a new position out on loan
Tottenham youngster George Abbott has expressed his delight after achieving a big landmark in his burgeoning career on Saturday.
Abbott delivers for Notts County
While all the top leagues in Europe have been on a break due to the international calendar, some of Tottenham’s youngsters in the EFL were in action for their club sides over the weekend.
This includes Abbott, who made a decisive contribution for Notts County as they played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Chesterfield.
The versatile Tottenham youngster made his eighth appearance of the season for the club and registered his first assist in senior football at the SMH Group Stadium.
Abbott delighted with the contribution
Although Abbott is a defensive midfielder by trade, he was used at right-back by manager Stuart Maynard on Saturday and he showed that he at the qualities to thrive in that role.
After the home side had taken the lead early in the game, the 19-year-old made a great run down the flank and chipped a cross to the back post, which was met by Alasanna Jatta to level the scores.
Speaking after the game, the teenager said (via Football.London): “It was unbelievable. The crowd were properly up for it today from both sides. I mean, it was a big game for both teams, and I think we both played pretty well.
“You could tell this meant a lot more than the other games I’ve played in. All the games mean something, but it was good to come back and get the draw.”
New position
According to Football.London, Abbott had 61 touches of the ball, made two key passes, completed one successful dribble, made three tackles, two interceptions and one clearance.
On the back of this showing, one would think that this is not the last we will see of the Spurs academy graduate at right-back this season.
When asked whether he’s got experience playing on the right flank, Abbott responded: “Not too much, but I mean, I can play there. I can play quite a few positions, so wherever the gaffer wants to put me, I’ll play there.”
On his first assist as a senior professional, he said: “Hopefully the first of many, but it felt unbelievable getting the assist, and I’m really happy about it.”
