List: Here are the nearly 500 Big Lots stores that have or will be closed this year

0

(NEXSTAR) — Big Lots is set to close nearly four dozen additional stores as it continues navigating through its bankruptcy filing.

The discount retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September.

Last week, an additional 46 closures across 23 states were approved by the bankruptcy court.

In total, Big Lots has closed or announced the closure of 494 of its stores — that’s nearly 36% of the footprint the chain had at the start of the year.

Over 140 of those stores have already closed and been removed from the Big Lots website.

So far, no closures have been announced for stores in Delaware, North Dakota, or Rhode Island. Mississippi and Nebraska were initially among those, but have since joined the list of states impacted by Big Lots closures.

Overall, Big Lots expected to close roughly 550 stores as part of its bankruptcy filing.

Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn previously said that “the majority of our store locations are profitable,” but that the company intended to “move forward with a more focused footprint to ensure that we operate efficiently and are best positioned to serve our customers.”

The retailer is still gearing up for the holiday season like any other retailer would, recently announcing "Black Friday Fridays" that runs through Dec. 6.

There's also hope Big Lots will come out the other side.

Last year, the Rite Aid Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, setting off a slew of Rite Aid store closures across the country. In early September, a year after its bankruptcy filing, the company announced it had "completed its financial restructuring and emerged from Chapter 11, marking a new beginning as a stronger company."
