Francisco Lindor Snubbed as Gold Glove Finalist; Severino in Top 3
Francisco Lindor on Tuesday was not named one of the three finalists for the NL Gold Glove award, Rawlings announced.
Dansby Swanson, Masyn Winn, and Ezequiel Tovar were named in the top three for the award, which allegedly is given to the best defender at their respective position. Swanson, Winn, and Tovar were the top three defenders with over 1,000 innings at short by Fielding Bible’s Defensive Runs Saved metric. That’s about the only metric and qualification that shows them as the top three defenders at short.

Lindor, on the other hand, was second behind Swanson in all of baseball with Outs Above Average. He’s third in Fangraphs’ defensive value rankings. He’s fifth in a more traditional, albeit largely useless, stat like fielding percentage and ranks better than most shortstops in errors.
Managers and coaches—seven total from each team—vote on the award. The site says the award “represents overall fielding excellence, and it is not an award based solely on fielding metrics and statistics.” That leaves one to believe the flashiness of a player is taken into account, and Winn’s arm is elite if we’re grasping at straws trying to understand the votes for him.
The Mets’ MVP hasn’t won a Gold Glove since 2016, when he was on Cleveland. He won another in 2016. Since his last win, he’s consistently been viewed by the naked eye and with metrics as one of the best shortstops in the game. That, plus his offensive capabilities at short, put him high in the WAR ranks every year. But, he doesn’t have the hardware to show for either of it.
He’ll be denied another year as he’s not even a finalist for the Gold Glove, and he’ll likely finish second behind Shohei Ohtani for the NL MVP Award.
Severino Lands in Top 3
Luis Severino, on the other hand, was named as a finalist for the NL Gold Glove for pitchers. Zack Wheeler and Chris Sale were also named. Severino hasn’t won a Gold Glove Award before.
