Construction worker accidentally shoots self at Lafayette High construction site, LPSS says
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A construction worker accidentally shot himself in the hand and lower leg while in his vehicle on Thursday, Lafayette Parish School System announced.
LPSS said the construction worker is employed by Lemoine, the contractor for the new Lafayette High School project. The worker was parked in a secure area near the construction site that does not afford access to the school, the school system said.
"At no time were any students in danger," LPSS said.
According to a news release, the worker was taken to a local hospital by a friend without notifying his employer or law enforcement. Staff at the hospital immediately notified law enforcement.
LPSS said the school administration was not notified of the incident until after police arrived at the construction area.
LPSS said Lemoine halted operations at 2:15 p.m. to conduct a safety stand-down and has initiated a full investigation into the incident. The Lafayette Police Department is also investigating.
