Sports briefs: San Rafael standouts net assists in Dominican victories

Former San Rafael High standout Norman Tellez notched his first assist of the season as the Dominican University men’s soccer team picked up a 4-0 victory against Academy of Art on Thursday.

Tellez, a sophomore who has started all 12 games for the Penguins (6-5-1, 3-3-0 PacWest), set up Thomas Van Schoor for the fourth goal in the 64th minute. Van Schoor also scored the third goal in the 61st minute.

Anthony Stainer scored inside the first minute and assisted on two goals for the Penguins.

Women’s soccer

Former San Rafael High standout Jackie Lancaster assisted on the first goal of the game as Dominican held on for a 2-1 victory against Academy of Art on Thursday.

Lancaster, who has a goal and two assists in four starts this season, passed to Ysabella Belandres in the 10th minute to stake the Penguins (5-6-1, 2-4-0) to a 1-0 lead. Academy of Art tied the game in the 23rd minute but Megan Clapinski provided the late winner for the Penguins in the 89th minute.

Girls tennis

Mirabel Arlander and Katie Warrin picked up wins in the top two singles spots to help Branson pick up a 5-2 win against Marin Catholic on Thursday. The Bulls swept the singles matches, also getting wins from Audrey Gilmor and Simone Schacter.

MC’s wins came at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, courtesy of Georgia Compagno/Heidi Koch and Payton Greco/Natalie Martin.

Girls volleyball

Muriel Harris and Alegra Huck combined for 15 kills and six blocks as Marin Academy won its fourth in a row, 28-26, 25-15, 25-17 against Lick-Wilmerding on Wednesday night. The Wildcats (16-10, 6-3 BCL West) also got 20 assists, 10 digs, five kills and two aces from Ellie Yasuda.

  • The MCAL playoffs are all but set after Wednesday’s action. Branson secured the top seed with a victory against San Rafael while Marin Catholic sewed up the second seed with a win against Terra Linda. Both teams secured first-round byes and host semifinals on Wednesday night. Redwood and Tam are locked in as the third and fourth seeds, respectively, and host first-round games on Tuesday. Terra Linda is likely to face Tam and San Marin is likely to face Redwood.

Boys water polo

Ryan Coleman scored a game-high eight goals as Tam (10-6, 4-3) secured a 15-11 victory against San Domenico on Thursday.

Girls golf

Marin Academy fell to St. Joseph Notre Dame by a single stroke, 200-201 at Peacock Gap on Friday. Sterling Colpitts and Kelly Lundgren paced the Wildcats (11-3) with 49s and senior Genevieve Zeches shot a 50.

MA finished in second place in league behind St. Joseph Notre Dame. The league tournament is set to be played at Peacock Gap on Monday.
