How much are you paying to heat your home this winter?

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEXSTAR) — New Yorkers will probably have higher gas bills this winter, according to New York's Public Service Commission (PSC). They said that the average customer—using 700 therms of natural gas—will pay about $202 per month to hear their homes, representing an 11% increase from last year.

Electricity could be slightly cheaper, however, according to the PSC. Electric bills for residences using 600 kilowatt hours per month would average about $58, a 2% decrease compared to last winter. Even so, if the weather gets colder than forecasted, costs for power are sure to increase.

PSC said they plan to offer increased discounts through the Energy Affordability Program in low-income areas with spiking prices. They also said that utility companies have enough natural gas and electricity to meet demand. Despite this low risk for outages, they advised carefully monitoring power consumption to keep your bills from getting too high.
