Tom Holland Offers Cryptic ‘Spider-Man 4’ Update, Says Script ‘Needs Work'
Tom Holland threw a bit of shade at Marvel’s current script for Spider-Man 4 during an appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast.
After revealing that he and co-star/girlfriend Zendaya read a draft of the script just a few weeks ago, Holland admitted that “it needs work.” The fourth installment in Holland’s Spider-Man franchise is set to be directed by Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton. Jon Watts, who helmed Marvel’s initial Holland trilogy, stepped aside to focus on George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s Wolfs. However, despite the script needing some fine-tuning, Holland made sure to specify “the writers are doing a great job.”
The actor assured fans that rewriting screenplays is a common practice in the industry, but it’s especially important with MCU productions. “One of the things to bear in mind with Marvel is that your film is a small cog in a large machine,” he explained. “And that machine has got to keep running. And you need to make sure you can fit into that timeline at the right time to benefit the bigger picture. That’s one of the challenges we’re facing. The time in which we need to get that done is a tall order but definitely achievable with the fantastic people we have working on it now.”
Holland continued: “I read it three weeks ago, and it really lit a fire in me. Zendaya and I sat down and read it together, and we at times were bouncing around the living room like, ‘This is a real movie worthy of the fans’ respect.’ But there’s a few things we need to figure out before we can get that really going, but it’s exciting.”
