Fate
Fate is a minimal low table designed by Paris-based studio Atelier Constant, founded by Xavier Dehaye. Commissioned by Nathalie Bucari, owner of Galerie Paradis in Paris, the piece highlights the interplay between traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, a characteristic of Dehaye’s design approach. Fate is made entirely from volcanic stone sourced from Mount Vesuvius, a material the designer discovered by chance during a trip to Naples. Intrigued by its possibilities, Dehaye explored the stone further and, in collaboration with a local production team near the volcano, crafted the table using highly-graded volcanic stone.
The versatility of this material allowed the designer to play with organic and porous extrusions, shaping a composition on its surface reminiscent of a topographic map. Dehaye also prioritized preserving the monochromatic quality of the lava stone, which further emphasizes the minimalist character of the table. By transforming raw volcanic stone into a functional yet sculptural object, Fate not only blurs the line between art and design—an ongoing theme in Atelier Constant’s work—but also brings an artistic piece into everyday living spaces while maintaining its practicality.
