Richard Bennett to visit Canada for discussions on Afghanistan’s Human Rights crisis
Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights for Afghanistan, is set to visit Canada to discuss the human rights crisis in Afghanistan.
From October 20 to November 1, Bennett will meet with Canadian officials, Afghan refugees, and civil society representatives.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) announced on Friday, October 18, that Bennett will engage with a wide range of stakeholders to explore ways Canada can continue to support human rights in Afghanistan.
During his visit to Ottawa and Toronto, Bennett will meet with Canadian officials, Afghan human rights defenders, women’s rights activists, journalists, experts, Canadian civil society organizations, and refugees who were resettled in Canada after the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021.
The Taliban has banned Bennett from traveling to Afghanistan. A Taliban spokesperson stated that Bennett spreads “propaganda” against Afghanistan and would no longer be allowed to visit the country.
Despite the ban, the UN Human Rights Council recently passed a resolution extending Richard Bennett’s mandate for another year.
Bennett’s visit to Canada will be crucial for discussing the international community’s role in addressing Afghanistan’s worsening human rights situation. His continued mandate highlights the importance of global efforts to advocate for Afghan rights.
This visit offers a platform for Afghan refugees and human rights defenders to voice their concerns and strengthen international partnerships to support the people of Afghanistan during this ongoing humanitarian crisis.
