Boston College Announces Plans To Honor Johnny Gaudreau

Boston College men’s hockey plays its home opener Friday, and there will be special tributes before the game.

The Eagles announced in a press release plans to recognize and honor Tony Voce, Johnny Gaudreau, and Matthew Gaudreau. Voce died at 43 years old on July 8; the details of his death were not disclosed to the public. The Gaudreau brothers were killed by an alleged drunk driver on Aug. 30 while riding their bicycles. Johnny Gaudreau was 31 and Matthew Gaudreau was 29.

Before BC’s home opener against AIC, there will be a video tribute and a moment of silence. The Eagles will wear a patch with the initials of Voce and the Gaudreaus. The men’s hockey trophy case on the concourse of Conte Forum was updated to highlight the accomplishments of all three players and their impact on the program.

Voce was a member of the 2001 national championship and a First Team All-American. Johnny Gaudreau was a 2-14 Hobey Baker Award winner, a two-time Hockey East Player of the Year and a member of the 2012 national championship team. Matthew Gaudreau was a two-time Beanpot champion in 2014 and 2016.

The Boston Bruins were among many other NHL teams to hold a moment of silence to recognize the Gaudreau brothers. The Columbus Blue Jackets also held an emotional ceremony to honor Johnny Gaudreau.
