49ers live updates: Niners face Chiefs in Super Bowl rematch
The 49ers face their biggest test of the young season on Sunday when they host the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, who they last saw in February at the Super Bowl.
The Chiefs, led by superstar Patrick Mahomes, crushed the 49ers’ championship dreams in overtime that night in Las Vegas with a 25-22 victory.
The Niners enter the game with a few extra days of rest and a number of players seeking to get healthy after last week’s Thursday night win in Seattle. Jordan Mason (shoulder) and Deebo Samuel (wrist) were limited in practice this week after picking up injuries in that game, and the 49ers have suffered two kicker injuries in as many weeks.
The Chiefs, like the 49ers with Christian McCaffrey, have been missing their own starting running back all season. Isiah Pacheco had leg surgery in mid-September and could return six-to-eight weeks after that procedure. Kansas City is also missing wide receivers Hollywood Brown and Rashee Rice, the latter of whom had knee surgery last week.
The Kansas City offense has been the subject of some consternation, 15th in the league at 23.6 points per game and 11th in yards at 354.6 per game. Mahomes has struggled to avoid mistakes throwing six touchdowns and six interceptions through five games.
