Sports briefs: Marin Academy volleyball rallies to win league title
Katie Murphy racked up 25 kills and claimed tournament MVP honors as the Marin Academy girls volleyball team rallied for a 25-17, 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-11 win over rival University in the Bay Counties League West championship game on Saturday night.
Murphy registered 20-plus kills for the second consecutive game after piling up 20 in the semifinal victory over Convent of the Sacred Heart.
Muriel Harris added 13 kills and six blocks for MA (19-10). Maddie Booth had 27 digs and three aces. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
The Wildcats had dropped seven consecutive matches to their league rival, dating back to 2022. MA fell at home in five sets in the regular season this year and lost in three sets on the road.
Despite the head-to-head win, MA was slotted just behind University when the North Coast Section brackets were released on Sunday. MA is the No. 4 seed in Division II and University is the No. 3 seed.
College football
Former Marin Catholic standout Spencer Petras wasn’t quite as prolific as he had been the previous few weeks, throwing for 194 yards and two touchdowns for Utah State in a 27-25 win against Wyoming on Saturday.
The Cowboys went ahead 25-24 on a field goal just inside the final 2 minutes, but Petras drove the Aggies down the field and put them in position to win the game as time expired with a 40-yard field goal.
Petras opened the scoring with a 38-yard pass to Otto Tia in the first quarter and put Utah State ahead 24-22 with a 10-yard pass to Josh Sterzer with about 12 minutes left to play.
Petras came into the contest averaging more than 371 yards over his past four games, including a career-high 461 yards two weeks ago against UNLV.
Another MC alum, Charles Williams is a freshman on Wyoming’s roster.
- Former San Marin High standout Dominic Ingrassia turned in the best performance of his freshman season, throwing for 200 yards and three touchdowns for College of San Mateo in a 49-14 win against Foothill on Saturday. Ingrassia completed 11 of 15 passes with all three scores coming in the first half. Ingrassia has completed 594% of his passes in four starts this season for 537 yards with four touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.
Girls water polo
Archie Williams went 3-1 to take third place in the championship bracket at the Tri-Valley Invitational held Friday and Saturday. The Peregrine Falcons defeated Lakeridge and Rio Americano on Friday before falling to eventual runner-up Las Lomas on Saturday. Archie Williams took down St. Ignatius in the third-place game.
Redwood and Tam placed sixth and seventh, respectively in the championship bracket. The Giants went 2-2, beating Santa Cruz and losing to Las Lomas on Friday. Redwood defeated St. Mary’s but lost to Righetti on Saturday.
Tam also went 2-2, splitting games on both days. Tam beat Garces Memorial but lost to St. Ignatius on Friday then lost to Righetti on Saturday before beating St. Mary’s to take seventh.
Terra Linda competed in the second-tier Premier bracket, going 3-1 to finish in 10th place. TL lost its opening game against Granada then bounced back with wins over College Park, Heritage, and Foothill.
All four teams are set to compete in the MCAL playoffs, which begin Tuesday. Terra Linda is seeded sixth and takes on No. 3 Tam in the first round. Archie Williams and Redwood both have byes. No. 5 Marin Catholic vs. No. 4 Redwood is the other first-round matchup. All games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday are being held at Archie Williams High.
