Photographer: Louise van der Meulen Summary Authors: Lynne Downer; Louise van der Meulen; Jim Foster
Shown above is one of the largest and oldest gingko trees (Ginkgo biloba) in the U.S. It's been growing in Frederick, Maryland since 1802. Standing 93 ft (28.3 m) tall, having a diameter of nearly 7 ft (2.1 m) and a spread of 92 ft (28.0 m), it was last measured in 1983.
With deep roots and a crown resistant to snow and ice loads and with wood largely unaffected by disease and insect infestation, some specimens in East Asia, where it's native, are documented to be over 1,000 years old. The beauty above has been lovingly nurtured by John H. and Julia E. Hanna for nearly 50-years.
