Justice minister ‘seriously concerned’ over delivery driver attacks

0

Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis on Monday said he was seriously concerned over the spate of attacks against delivery drivers, and would have a high-level meeting during the week to discuss the issue.

He told reporters the meeting would take place at the justice ministry on Wednesday with the police chief and labour minister.

The aim is to discuss the increasing attacks against delivery drivers.

On Friday, two food delivery companies met with Limassol’s police chief Andreas Angelides amid increasing concerns.

Angelides stressed such behaviour is not tolerated, and during the meeting they all decided to better coordinate so as to clampdown on the phenomenon.

Limassol’s police chief will also plan to meet with delivery drivers directly, for advice and guidance on how to help.

On Saturday morning, police were notified that a delivery driver on his motorbike was attacked by a group of youths in the heart of Limassol’s city centre.

In August, hundreds of delivery drivers staged a peaceful protest in Limassol expressing deep concern over what they described as a frightening surge in violent attacks against them.

They announced a three-day strike as they said it was an everyday occurrence for drivers to be ambushed, robbed and humiliated by groups of people.
