Dax Shepard on What It Was Like Watching His Wife Kiss Adam Brody
Netflix's romcom series Nobody Wants This was an instant hit for the streamer, thanks in no small part to the crackling chemistry of the two leads, Kristen Bell and Adrien Brody. The pair play an agnostic sex and dating podcast host and rabbi who find themselves in an unlikely relationship. And apparently the onscreen romance was almost too believable for Bell's husband, Dax Shepard.
Shepard, who has hosted the Armchair Expert podcast since 2018, was asked about his own "incredible chemistry" with Bell during the New Yorker Festival on Saturday. In addition to his wife appearing on the inaugural episode of his podcast, which he briefly touched on, the couple have also appeared in Samsung commercials and hosted the short-lived NBC game show Family Game Fight! together.
"Not as good as her and Brody," Shepard retorted, referring to The O.C. star, according to People. That said, the 49-year-old continued, making it clear that he has respect for the craft.
"My friend ... we watched that scene together, the kissing scene, which I'd argue is the very best kissing scene ever, ever put on film," he explained. "And my best friend, Aaron, from childhood, he goes, 'Does she ever kiss you like that?' No, I didn't even know she could kiss like that."
Bell also opened up about the steamy scenes between herself and Brody while speaking with E! News earlier this month.
“Even I can acknowledge watching it, like, 'Whoa, that’s hot,'" Bell said at the time. "My husband said the same thing. Like, watching the first episode he was like, 'Oh my god, I want you to kiss him so badly.'"
However, she also assured fans that at the end of the day, it's just acting.
“I’m not trying to be reductive, but I think there’s a math to it," the Bell continued. "You have two actors that know how to stare dopily into each other’s eyes, and you have to have the confidence to expand that and really sit the anticipatory value before the kiss—which I think is really important.
"Whether or not people want to see you end up with someone is a crap shoot, and we just kind of got lightning in a bottle," she added.
We'll say. Just weeks after premiering on Sept. 26, 2024, Netflix renewed the series, created by writer Erin Foster and based on her own life, for a second season set to premiere in 2025.
