Liberal Democratic party led by Shavkat Mirziyoyev leads Uzbekistan’s Parliamentary elections

The Uzbekistan Election Commission announced on Monday, October 28 that the Liberal Democratic Party, led by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is leading in the parliamentary elections.

The party secured 42.7% of the votes, winning 64 out of the 150 seats in the country’s parliament.

The elections, which took place on Sunday, October 27, saw limited participation from opposition parties. Experts believe that despite some changes following the constitutional amendments, the legislative body will remain aligned with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

Mirziyoyev has been the President of Uzbekistan since 2016 and has gained considerable popularity through economic reforms and by easing the strict restrictions on political, religious, and media freedoms imposed by previous administrations.

This was the first election in Uzbekistan held under a mixed majority-proportional system. A total of 875 candidates from five political parties competed for 150 seats.

Nearly a thousand international observers from 50 countries and organizations, including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Association of World Election Bodies, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, monitored the elections.

The recent elections in Uzbekistan highlight the growing political influence of the Liberal Democratic Party under President Mirziyoyev’s leadership.

The limited presence of opposition parties and the alignment of the legislative body with the president indicate continuity in governance. The involvement of international observers also reflects an effort towards transparency, marking a significant moment in Uzbekistan’s evolving political landscape.
