How to replace a ballot if impacted by Portland, Vancouver ballot box fires

0

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Authorities are connecting early morning ballot box fires in Portland and Vancouver, with hundreds of ballots destroyed in Vancouver.

How do you know if your ballot was impacted? And how would you replace it so your vote counts?

Multnomah County

Multnomah County Elections Director Tim Scott said only three ballots were destroyed in Monday's fire, which happened outside of the Multnomah County Election Division office on Southeast Morrison around 3:30 a.m.

The rest of the ballots were protected by a fire suppression system in the ballot box, according to Scott.

How would you replace a ballot in Multnomah County? The county's Elections office says to go to its website to fill out an "Order Ahead Replacement Ballot Request Form."

In order to track the progress of your ballot, go to the Oregon Secretary of State's voting and elections page and select "My Vote" from the options.

Clark County

Hundreds of ballots were destroyed in Monday morning's fire at the ballot drop box at Fisher's Landing Transit Center, which started about 30 minutes after the ballot box fire was reported in Portland, according to authorities.

According to Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey, ballots dropped in that box, located at 3510 SE 164th Ave, after 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 may have been damaged or destroyed.

However, elections officials in Clark County have gathered and processed the ballots that were still able to go into the sorting machine.

In order to track the progress of your ballot in Washington, registered voters can access the Vote WA portal to track their ballot.

Clark County officials say voters who used the impacted ballot drop box can see if their ballot was received using that portal, and if they do not see their ballot as being received by Oct. 28, they can get a new ballot by visiting the Elections Office at 1408 Franklin St. in downtown Vancouver or calling the Elections Office at 564.397.2345 or emailing elections@clark.wa.gov.

The Clark County Elections Office also has step-by-step instructions on its website for replacing a ballot.

"I am very saddened by this incident," Kimsey said in a statement. "This action is an attack on American democracy."

What we know about the fires

The first fire on Monday was reported outside of the Multnomah County Elections Division office on Southeast Morrison around 3:30 a.m., according to Portland police. When officers arrived, they found the fire was mostly out. Scott said the majority of ballots inside the ballot drop box were protected after the drop box's fire suppression system was activated.

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, authorities say the Portland and Vancouver incidents were likely linked to an incident on Oct. 8 in Vancouver.

The FBI says it's investigating the incidents as well.

By 1 p.m., officials in Portland had released surveillance photos of a Volvo they believe is connected to the fires.
