Fort Greene Townhouse
Fort Greene Townhouse is a minimal townhome located in Brooklyn, New York, designed by Bangia Agostinho. The home, originally built in 1861, is situated in the historic Fort Greene neighborhood. The couple brought distinct backgrounds to the project—the wife, an interiors consultant with experience in fashion and branding, and the husband, originally from Wales, now working in impact investing. Their vision was clear from the beginning: they sought a home that would balance the bustling energy of New York City with the calming qualities of their rural upbringings. Inspired by Bangia Agostinho’s ability to blend modern aesthetics with respect for original architectural structures, they wanted to create a space that was welcoming for friends and family while offering a sense of grounding tranquility.
The project’s primary challenge involved restoring the original house while adapting it to modern living. The brownstone consisted of a four-story main structure and a two-story rear extension. Although the main structure retained its original elegance, the extension had suffered significant water damage and previous renovations that clashed with the home’s historic character. The team worked closely with the Landmarks and Preservation Commission to rebuild the extension, ensuring the new brick facade matched the neighboring houses. Inside, the renovation focused on creating a light-filled, contemporary layout that honored the townhouse’s historical features.
The rooms were reconfigured to allow for smooth transitions between spaces, with large windows at the rear flooding the interiors with natural light. Informal gathering areas and terraces on multiple levels provided direct outdoor access, further enhancing the connection to nature. The interior design combined preservation, restoration, and modern interventions. Original moldings were retained where possible, and those lost to structural changes were carefully replicated. The infrastructure was updated with smart technology and energy-efficient systems, all integrated seamlessly into the home.
Custom cabinetry was designed to complement the home’s historical detailing without overwhelming it. The material palette, chosen in collaboration with the owner, emphasized natural textures and warm, earthy tones, including richly veined stone, muted wood, and textured finishes. These elements created a calming atmosphere, extending from the interior to the outdoor spaces. The furniture and lighting, a mix of new, vintage, and heirloom pieces, added to the timeless, personal feel of the home.
