LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – Firefighters pulled a 69-year-old woman from a house fire in Lafayette Wednesday night, but could not rescue her pets, authorities said.

Lafayette Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 100 block of Charles Drive at 9:24 p.m. Wednesday. Neighbors noticed flames coming from a bedroom window and called 911.

First responders were informed that an elderly female was inside, officials said. The occupant was found inside the smoke-filled dwelling. Emergency crews brought her outside and began providing medical care. Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene, continued care and transported the unidentified 69-year-old to a local hospital, authorities said.

The dwelling sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Two of the owner’s pets, a dog and a cat, perished in the fire.

Fire officials determined the fire originated in the bedroom. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
