Four cheap and easy ways to fill your home with warming fragrances this autumn
CHANGING the scent of your home is an easy way to celebrate autumn.
Immerse yourself in the cosy months with warming fragrances like orange, cinnamon, vanilla and amber.
Create pleasing aromas with these easy ideas.
AUTUMN MIST: Make your own room spray filled with all the scents of autumn.
Use cinnamon, clove, orange and cedarwood essential oils.
Mix around ten drops of the oils with two tablespoons of witch hazel or vodka and six tablespoons of boiled and cooled water. Decant into a mini spray bottle and shake to combine. If you like your scent stronger, you might want to add more oils.
Instead of spraying into the air, give your fragrance staying power by misting it onto cushions and throws.
MAKES SCENTS: If you think incense is a relic of hippy times, think again.
Modern incense is beloved by top-end cosmetic companies, like Aesop, which charges £30 for a pack of 33 sticks.
Or a box of 40 mulled clementine incense sticks with a ceramic holder is £6.50 at Habitat.
ON PONG: Another throwback idea back in fashion is pot pourri — dried flowers, leaves and spices make your home smell amazing.
Fill a glass bowl or vase with orange or red pot pourri to enjoy the look as well as the lingering scent. Look in stores including The Range and Dunelm for inexpensive mixes.
FRAGRANT FIRES: If you have an open fire or woodburning stove, you could add some sweet-smelling additions to the flames.
Dried orange peel not only gives a gorgeous smell, it’s also a natural fire lighter thanks to the oil in the skin.
Leave it for a few weeks to dehydrate before using a few shreds on your fire.
You can also add a couple of cinnamon sticks for a gently warming smell, or use dried out rosemary or thyme on top of the burning logs.
