Canada’s Leylah Fernandez came up short in her title defence at the Hong Kong Open.
The No. 3 seed Fernandez was eliminated following a 6-4, 6-2 loss to top-seeded Diana Shnaider of Russia in Saturday’s semifinals.
Fernandez finished the match with two aces and four double faults.
Shnaider had four aces and two double faults. She also converted on five of eight break-point opportunities.
Fernandez made her first semifinal appearance since reaching the Rothesay International in June where she advanced to the final. The 22-year-old from Laval, Que., also made it to the quarterfinals last weekend in Tokyo.
Shnaider will play Britain’s Katie Boulter in the championship match. The second-seeded Boulter advanced with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over China’s Yue Yuan.
