Edinburgh Cowgate incident: Police rush to busy Scots street after pedestrian hit by vehicle
POLICE have locked down Edinburgh’s Cowgate after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle.
Venues were ordered to shut by police after” what was initially described as a “road traffic incident”.
Forensics teams in white suits were spotted entering a cordon near a police tent while unformed officers stood guard around Cowgate.
Bosses at Bachata Blues dance centre revealed their party at The Mash House nightclub was shuttered alongside all other businesses in the affected area.
They said: “Following police instructions, all Cowgate venues are going to be closed tonight due to a major incident.
“All ways to enter Cowgate are cut off. Unfortunately, we have to cancel tonight’s event as Mash House will remain closed all night, following police instructions.”
Blue and white police tape could be seen at the bottom of Niddry Street, which is home to a number of popular pubs and clubs.
A number were due to hold Halloween events.
Police have since confirmed they were called to the area after a serious incident.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers in Edinburgh are currently dealing with a serious road traffic collision in the Cowgate area of the city.
“Shortly after 7.30pm on Saturday, 2 November, we responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Enquiries are ongoing.
“As a result, Blair Street, Guthrie Street and Candlemaker Row are closed to pedestrians and traffic. Members of the public are asked to avoid the area until further notice.”
