Breeders' Cup Classic 2024: Results and payouts as Sierra Leone wins at Del Mar
This story has been updated.
The richest horse race in North America belongs to Sierra Leone.
Del Mar Racetrack in California played host to the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday, pitting the top thoroughbreds ages three years and up against each other in arguably the most stacked field of the season.
A number of last spring’s Triple Crown threats loaded into the starting gate for the 1+1⁄4 miles dirt track race, including Forever Young, Tapit Trice, Sierra Leone and Fierceness. Fierceness went off as the last-minute favorite.
The Breeders’ Cup World Championships will return to Del Mar in 2025, beginning on the final weekend of October and continuing into November.
