NBC4 talks with Sen. Sherrod Brown as Election Day approaches

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- There are just three days to go until the election and Ohio's race for U.S. Senate has eyes from all over the country on the Buckeye State, so we are bringing you the latest in the race, including a one-on-one with Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Brown is hoping to be re-elected to his fourth term as one of Ohio’s two U.S. Senators. He’s in a tight race against Republican businessman Bernie Moreno. Moreno has never held any office. “We’re done with these career politicians,” Moreno said.

“I take no vote for granted, I’m going all over the state,” Brown said. “I’m an 88 county Senator and I run and 88 county campaign.” Brown spent his Saturday morning at a local barber shop in central Ohio, talking to the customers, the employees, and even kids.

Statehouse reporter Natalie Fahmy asked him what he plans to do differently should he be elected to a fourth term. At first, he answered by laying out parts of his record. He pointed to thinks like the Pact Act for veterans, and his work to “save the pensions of 100,000 union workers,” in a bill named after a Cincinnati resident who has since died. He said his fourth term will consist of similar work.

“I’ll continue the work focus on the $35 insulin cap for everybody, not just Medicare beneficiaries, I’ll keep fighting to invest more in housing,” he said. “I’ll always come down on the side of the dignity of work.”

Brown said he will also work to ensure the CHIPS Act, which is helping fund the Intel project in central Ohio, will “keep going according to schedule,” so Ohioans can feel the positive impacts from the project. Earlier this week, Moreno talked about his plans to help Ohioans save money while Brown said he also has a plan to help Ohioans afford their day-to-day lives.

“When you go to the grocery store you pay more because of cooperate greed and stock buy backs and corporate leaders getting bonuses and all that, and I’m taking that on head on,” Brown said. “I will continue to take on the drug companies to limit prices, especially on things like insulin.

Brown said there is a stark difference between himself and Moreno. “I’ll continue to fight for workers, my opponent looks out for himself, and his special interest friends and that contrast is really clear,” Brown said. “I’ll never forget that I work for the people of Ohio,” Moreno said. “You’re my boss.”

And reproductive rights have been a big part of Brown’s campaign. “It’s the only tool they have in their toolbox, because it’s the ultimate distraction tool,” Moreno said. “My opponent thinks he knows better [than Ohioans],” Brown said. “He’s 100% pro-life, his words.”

Each candidate is campaigning all over Ohio this weekend. The winner of this race will play a key role in determining whether Republicans or Democrats hold control of the U.S. Senate.
