Mumbai Restaurant Viral menu: Mumbai is home to some of the most iconic heritage buildings from India’s colonial era and still features some timeless sights which offers a peek into those times. One such heritage item, which has recently gone viral on social media platforms is an old menu card from a famous restaurant which was closed in 2018.
The menu card of “Light of Asia” restaurant, which was operational until 2018, offers a mouth-watering range of delicacies. The restaurant specialised in non-vegetarian cuisine like mutton, pork, fish, and eggs, while vegetarian items were only served as side dishes. However, unlike present time, the terms “veg” and “non-veg”, are not mentioned on the menu.
The restaurant offered a fine-dining experience, featuring a unique fusion of English and Continental dishes, such as sweetbreads, tongue, and rare meats like liver and kidney. The historic restaurant, which was located in the heart of Mumbai city, opposite the General Post Office, near the the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (then Victoria Terminus), was a popular stopover for commuters, attracting people from various walks of life, like soldiers, tourists, sailors, as well as locals.
The menu featured a mouth-watering blend of British and local Indian cultures of the time, offering Continental as well as popular Indian cuisine like biryani, curry, mutton mollii and mutton bafat.
Apart for its wide range of delicacies, the restaurant also offered a variety of refreshing drinks, popular at the time, such as Ovaltine, Winto, and Thurst — none of these can be found in any Indian restaurant today. The restaurant also featured a soda fountain that churned out refreshing hand-pumped carbonated drinks, and also offered other beverages like ice cream soda, gingerade, and falooda, tantalizing the taste buds of foreigners as well as locals.
