For the first time in 147 years: Ravindra Jadeja and Ajaz Patel create history in Mumbai Test

New Zealand defeated India by 25 runs at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai to complete their first-ever series whitewash in away conditions and hand the Men in Blue a painful defeat which saw them lose their top spot to Australia on the World Test Championship (WTC) points table.

India had to achieve a modest target of 147 in the final innings of the Test, however they failed to do so thanks to Kiwi spinners Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips who took 9 wickets between them.

Despite India’s defeat, Ravindra Jadeja did make a record during this match. Him alongside Ajaz Patel clinched this feat together.

For the first time in 147 years of Test cricket left-arm spinners took five wickets in all four innings of a Test match. Jadeja crippled the Kiwi batting order in their first innings with his spell of 5/65 before Patel finished with figures of 5/103 in India’s first innings.

Then Jadeja would finish with figures of 5/55 in New Zealand’s second innings which helped India in bowling out the visitors for 174. Finally, Patel would end up racking 6 scalps in the final innings of the Test and massively help his side in winning the match.

With these 3 straight defeats in the series, India’s hopes of reaching the WTC final took a major hit and now they can’t afford losing a single match in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.
