How Patriots’ Jerod Mayo Feels About Lofty Drake Maye Comparison

There was a particular piece of Drake Maye praise that stood out from the rest after the Patriots’ overtime thriller in Nashville.

Maye, who miraculously forced the extra frame at Nissan Stadium with an impressive game-tying touchdown drive, was widely applauded by his New England teammates. But Davon Godchaux took the saluting to another level when he referred to the rookie quarterback as “Josh Allen 2.0.”

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the comparison Monday while appearing on WEEI.

“I call him Drake Maye 1.0,” Mayo said, as transcribed by SB Nation. “I don’t want to get into comparisons. Josh Allen is a multi-year Pro Bowl quarterback. We’re here at the beginning stages of a developing quarterback that I think we’re all excited about.”

That’s probably the right approach from Mayo. Player-to-player comparisons typically are useless exercises, especially when a rookie is involved.

But the similarities between Allen and Maye are starting to surface. Like the 22-year-old, the Bills star showed plenty of promise in his first season with Buffalo but matched those highlights with avoidable mistakes.

It didn’t take Allen very long to polish his game, though. And if Maye can do the same in short order, it will make New England’s future even brighter.
