Beloved Amtrak Ski Train Returns With Expanded Schedule
Colorado visitors looking to see as much as possible this without having to use a car this ski season will have more options than ever to avoid winter traffic jams.
Amtrak just announced the return of its beloved Winter Park Express train for the winter 2024–25 season. The service begins Dec. 20 to 22 and will also run Dec. 27 to 29 and Jan. 3 through 5. Starting Jan. 9, expanded service will begin and run Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays through March 31, 2025.
The trains will run from Denver's Union Station to both the Winter Park Resort and, for the first time ever, nearby Fraser Valley for sightseeing. The route is the first leg of a proposed "Mountain Corridor" rail line that would eventually reach from Denver to the town of Craig in the northwest corner of the state. The train will offer 69 round trips in total this year, a jump of nearly 30 compared to last year, according to Travel + Leisure.
"We look forward to a bigger season than ever, with more than twice as many trips and an additional destination," Amtrak executive vice president Dennis Newman said in a statement. "With the state of Colorado expanding its partnership with the resort and Amtrak, the future of passenger rail on this corridor is bright."
It's a breathtaking ride through the mountains with large windows for passengers' viewing pleasure. That's sure to attract skiers who just want to get on the slopes in peace without sitting in auto gridlock.
"The Winter Park Express is a great opportunity for Coloradans and visitors to explore our mountains without the hassle of driving or traffic," Gov. Jared Polis said. "Now with expanded service and lower costs, Coloradans can save time and money on our way to enjoying our great outdoors."
Tickets for the Winter Park Express are available now and start at $19 for adults and $9.50 for kids.
