Michael Jordan Debunks Viral Election Rumor About Himself

0

Michael Jordan was forced to issue a statement after a viral social media post suggested that the NBA champion was endorsing Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential race.

The rumor started on Sunday with a post to X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Jordan had “become the latest to endorse Trump.” Readers added context, finding that there is “no evidence of this claim” and noting that “Jordan has remained [politically] neutral in the past.”

But on Monday, a representative for the tequila magnate denied to The Independent that the athlete had endorsed either Trump or Harris. “There is absolutely no truth to the claim that Michael Jordan has made an endorsement in the presidential election,” his team told the outlet.

Jordan has remained largely mum on his politics throughout his career. In his 2020 docuseries The Last Dance, Jordan said that being a political activist was never part of how he viewed his role.

“I do commend Muhammad Ali for standing up for what he believed in. But I never thought of myself as an activist. I thought of myself as a basketball player. I wasn’t a politician when I was playing my sport," he said.

As far as Jordan is concerned, his job is to play basketball and entertain his fans. For him, politics doesn’t figure into that vision. “I was focused on my craft,” he said. “Was that selfish? Probably. But that was my energy. That’s where my energy was.”
