Anchovy Swarm off California Coast

California is having an invasion -- of anchovies. In late summer, millions upon millions of anchovies were just offshore Santa Cruz, California. It seems the water here is colder than normal now, and cold water is exactly what anchovies need. As a result, wildlife, such as seagulls, pelicans and whales are gluttonous. On a recent camping/hiking trip not too far from Santa Cruz, I snapped photos of a huge anchovy swarm and of pelicans feasting on them.
Fishermen are also taking advantage of this swarm. However, there are some downsides to this invasion. First, it escalates erosion on the bottom of fishing boats. Secondly, there are concerns about a great die-off. When millions of anchovies die, the smell can be horrendous. Businesses along the coast that depend on tourism such as restaurants, bakeries, coffee houses, etc. worry that the potential stench will deter customers. Photos taken on August 28, 2024.
