Legal expert unloads on Dems who campaigned on Trump as a threat — but 'don't believe it'

A former litigator and justice correspondent at The Nation slammed Democrats on Thursday night who he said seemingly campaigned on the platform that Donald Trump was a threat to democracy — but "don't believe it."

Elie Mystal took to X on Thursday night to weigh in on the election, specifically the "lessons" Democrats must take away from the election.

"Dems talking about the lessons they need to learn for ‘28 are revealing to me why Trump as a 'threat to democracy' didn’t stick. Because even DEMS don’t believe it," he said. "Nobody believes Trump is a unique threat to democratic self government if they expect to STILL HAVE IT in 4 years."

Mystal noted that Trump was "NOT a unique threat" if Democrats are allowed to participate in a free and fair election in 2028, rather than a "sham 'Vance wins 89% of the vote' thing." If that happens, Trump, he said, was "just an old, racist, a--hole with delusions of grandeur."

But Mystal said unlike Democrats he's heard from, he does consider Trump a unique threat.

"Apparently a lot of you motherf---ers don’t and just thought it was some bomb a-- s--- to say during a campaign," he railed. "And if you people are right well then maybe 'the lesson' is as simple as 'don’t base the campaign on something you don’t believe.'"
