TOPEKA (KSNT) - Work crews will be reconstructing a major intersection in Topeka starting next week with the project scheduled to last into next year.
Robert Bidwell with the City of Topeka said in a press release that workers will arrive at Southwest Sixth Avenue and MacVicar Avenue on Tuesday, Nov. 12 to reconstruct the intersection. This work will be done in phases so traffic can continue to use the intersection with some reductions to turning movements.
Bidwell said during the first phase of this project, work will be centered in the northeast part of the intersection. Drivers on Sixth Avenue will only be able to use one lane in each direction in the eastbound lanes. The following movements at the intersection will be impacted by this project:
Eastbound traffic on Sixth Avenue will not be allowed to turn left onto northbound MacVicar Avenue.
Westbound traffic on Sixth Avenue will not be allowed to turn right onto northbound MacVicar Avenue.
Northbound traffic on MacVicar Avenue will not be allowed to travel north across Sixth Avenue.
Southbound traffic on MacVicar Avenue will not be allowed to turn left onto eastbound Sixth Avenue.

Bidwell reminds drivers that it is illegal to cut through private property to get around a work zone. Drivers are urged to follow the traffic plan or find other routes to avoid this intersection while the project is ongoing.
Workers are scheduled to finish the first phase by Dec. 2. The entire project is set to be finished in the spring of 2025.
