Elderly couple in Breaux Bridge receive new home months after storm
BREAUX BRIDGE, La. (KLFY) -- In May, Merline and Maxie Batiste went to celebrate a joyous occasion, their granddaughter's graduation.
When they returned, they found their home destroyed after a storm ripped through the area.
After months of living in a camper on their property, Merline Batiste says a neighbor of theirs provided them much needed relief by donating a mobile home to them two weeks ago.
"This guy that brought some property down the road had some trailers that he was getting rid of and this one was in better condition, the other one was about to tear down, so he gave it to us and said its y'all's, and I thank him so much," she said.
Merline said it was difficult for her and her husband to believe they would ever settle into a new home. But, with the unwavering love and support from her family and friends, she says she found strength and resilience.
The Batiste Family said they look forward to not only enjoying their new home, but also continuing to love each other through all of their highs and lows.
"There's a lot of times I was trying to give up," she said. "He said 'Babe it's going to be okay,' because it was a struggle. I had family and friends, they gave me a little push. I held it."
