‘Disy remains firmly in opposition’

0

Disy is ready to collaborate with the President of the Republic and any one else from the political sphere who has positive policies for the country, party leader Annita Demetriou said on Sunday.

In statements after the memorial of Disy founder and former President Glafcos Clerides, she was asked to comment about an interview where President Nikos Christodoulides told the state broadcaster that he would want Disy in government.

Demetriou stressed Disy is firmly in opposition “where the citizens placed it.”

Asked if the team she announced a day earlier aimed at monitoring the government’s work was a step the party was taking ahead of the 2028 presidential elections, she rejected the suggestion.

“The country above all. Not 2028, not personal ambitions, nothing else.”

Demetriou added the aim behind the newly announced team is to ensure it can propose policies and shape Disy’s policy so as to tackle any challenges.

Commenting on Clerides, the party leader said the memorial did not only serve to commemorate him as an individual, but to realise the responsibility of continuing the course he charted “with the same political realism, ethos, consistency and determination.”

She said Clerides was not just the founder of Disy: “he is the man, the visionary who put the country above all else.”
