Air quality remains poor in NYC as fires burn in NY, NJ: NWS

0

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – Air quality is still poor in New York City Sunday morning as fires rage on in New York and New Jersey, according to the National Weather Service.

An air quality alert remains in effect in New York City and the lower Hudson Valley through Sunday night, according to the NWS.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says New York City’s air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, like people with heart or lung disease, older adults and children. These people are encouraged to minimize strenuous outdoor activities.

There is still an elevated risk of wildfire in the area on Sunday.

Fires are still burning in parts of New York and New Jersey, including a fire in West Milford that has spread to New York. As of Saturday evening, the fire had burned 2,000 acres and was not contained at all, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.

Another fire burning in Pompton Lakes was 75% contained Saturday evening after breaking out on Friday.

A large brush fire started in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park Friday, burning about two acres of the park, fire officials said.
