'We’re furious': Fake contractors target Portland homeowners, local roofing company

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Fake business cards, unfinished contracting jobs and at least one victim suddenly out tens of thousands of dollars.

A Portland family never thought it’d happen to them, yet it did to the tune of roughly $25,000.

"We’re furious. I think all of us are just all of those things: angry, frustrated, irate," says Lindsey.

KOIN 6 isn’t fully identifying the woman for her family’s protection.

Her father was approached by two men earlier this year near his home in northeast Portland.

His chimney needed some improvements, and the so-called contractors offered to take a look.

"They did some damage while they were looking at it. Then, they could take pictures and show him 'Look at all the damage you have,'" says Lindsey.

Over the next two weeks, the pair kept offering up promises of repairs and work orders as Lindsey’s dad handed over cash.

"They left a huge mess in his yard. They kept coming back 'Oh, we need X amount. We need some more to order the bricks.' Then, they just disappeared,” she said. "They were masquerading as a different company. It's obviously different if you're looking close enough, but Dad just didn't look close enough, which is what they're banking on."

Longtime roofers like Verrill Beaudro have heard of just about every scheme in the book.

Still, he was stunned when his own company caught wind of a similar ploy a couple months ago.

“The first red flag we got, ‘Who the hell is this?"’ says Beaudro.

The Oregon State graduate started Flow Roofing seven years ago.

Now, he’s fighting to protect his company’s top-notch reputation after someone started handing out fake Flow Roofing business cards.

"It's almost out of a movie, it's so well organized. You almost have to appreciate they put so much detail into it," Beaudro told KOIN 6.

The cards list his business address, his state contractor license number and other key details, but include a slightly different email and phone number.

"We don't have this person on our payroll. We've never heard of them, never hired them," said Beaudro.

He even got tipped off to what he says is a fake Flow Roofing website, which could further confuse potential customers.

"It needs to stop. I put my life's work into this and I'm not gonna let this happen," said Beaudro.

KOIN 6 called and emailed the numbers and addresses on the business cards, and on the website, but got no responses.

The Better Business Bureau for the West Coast & Pacific region says cases like this aren’t uncommon, especially when it comes to jobs like roofing.

"Often, they are not licensed, not bonded and not insured," said Cameron Nakashima, one of the organization’s media engagement managers.

"It's something we see a lot of reports about, unfortunately, and they are big expenses. They're big dollar amounts tied to these," he said.

Lindsey’s family did file a Portland Police report but the case is stalled because of a lack of evidence.

Her advice? Be cautious when it comes to contractors going door to door down the street.

"Not everybody is a good person. These guys are taking people for so much money, and it's just awful."

The Portland Police Bureau encourage anyone who thinks they're a victim of fraud to file an online police report, or contact the non-emergency phone number at 503-823-3333. The bureau's property crime detectives can also access the FTC Fraud Complaint database, which can be found here.
