Lafayette's hazardous waste disposal day is soon. Here's what to know
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- About 80% of items in landfills could have been recycled.
Bess Foret, LCG's Environmental Quality Manager, said Lafayette has had a recycling program since the '90s.
"We were really in the forefront of that," Foret said" "The reason why is because all of our waste has to go to a landfill. In Lafayette, we don't have one nearby, and so that means tracking all that garbage an hour away just to sit in a landfill."
However, not everything can or should be recycled. LCG is hosting community events over the next two weeks to dispose of those items not meant to be sent to landfills and recycling centers.
Lafayette is helping residents dispose of household hazardous waste Saturday, Nov. 23 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Northgate Mall.
Items such as batteries, paint and electronics will be accepted.
Confidential documents should also not be thrown away to protect your personal identifiable information. LCG is hosting 'Paper Shredding Day' this Saturday at the Robicheaux Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to noon to reduce the risk of identity theft for Lafayette Parish residents.
LCG and Keep Lafayette Beautiful are also participating in America Recycles Day on Friday, Nov. 15, by giving away recyclable shopping bags at select, local grocery stores across Lafayette Parish.
