'Lives are going to be affected': Duson mayor reacts to possible school closure

DUSON, La. (KLFY) -- Local officials, parents and former students at Duson Elementary School are voicing their concerns about the proposed closing of the school.

Duson Mayor Johnny Thibodeaux said the school closing will affect the growth of the town as a whole.

"Closing the Duson Elementary school is not just closing the school, it's closing our community. Our community is going to be affected by this. Lives are going to be affected by this," Thibodeaux said.

The Lafayette Parish School System announced Wednesday that it received the final recommendations for district optimization from the Civic Solutions Group. Other schools that could face possible closure are, S-J Montgomery Elementary, Katharine Drexel Elementary, Acadian Middle, Lafayette Middle and Comeaux High School.

If Duson Elementary were to be closed, students would be re-zoned to Charles Burke Elementary, according to the Lafayette Parish School System.

Thibodeaux said students should be able to stay at the school. He said the learning environment is better, based on test scores from the last school year.

"If you look at the test scores of the Duson Elementary School and you compare them to Burke Elementary and I had compared them to Westside Elementary and Ossun Elementary, where they were scheduled to send our kids, we do better, our test scores here are better for our kids," Thibodeaux said.

Brooke Schexnyder, a former student at Duson Elementary, said she attended the school from 1998 to 2004. She said she has nothing but great memories from everyone she interacted with at the school.

"The one thing I remember the most are the teachers and all the staff over there, the lunch ladies that were so wonderful and all the teachers who all knew me by name, and I made some great friendships over there," Schexnyder said.

As the only school standing in Duson, Schexnyder said the closing would put the education of many at risk.

"It's just a wonderful school that's like hidden within the Duson area because it's the only one there, and it would be a shame if they just closed it down right then and there," Schexnyder said.

The Lafayette Parish School System will vote on these final recommendations next Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the school board office. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
