Lafayette man convicted of 2021 fatal stabbing of Kennedy Mouton Sr.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A Lafayette man was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the July 2021 fatal stabbing of 57-year-old Kennedy Mouton Sr.
Troinanthan Troyal Woods was found guilty by a Lafayette jury Thursday afternoon of the manslaughter of Mouton, according to a news release from District Attorney Don Landry's Office.
His sentencing is set for Feb. 5. With the manslaughter conviction, Woods faces a sentence of up to 40 years at hard labor.
Per the news release, the stabbing occurred on July 23, 2021, on at the home Woods shared with his aunt and Mouton on St. Antoine Street in Lafayette. A neighbor reportedly seeing Woods running from the scene with a knife while Mouton was left severely wounded.
Woods surrendered to law enforcement within days after the stabbing and was charged with second-degree murder.
During trial, the jury heard testimony about how the home appeared as well as details on Mouton's injuries. Mouton suffered multiple stab wounds and ultimately died from a puncture wound to the heart.
Landry said Mouton's family stayed in constant contact with his office and cooperated whenever called on.
“We are satisfied with the verdict, and looking forward to seeing that this family continues to see justice after the senseless death of their family member,” Landry said in the news release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Andi Lex, Alan Haney and Frederick Welter.
“We respect the jury’s verdict in this case, and will continue to work to see that a sentence is
ordered that will provide them with justice,” Lex said.
