Ratan Tata fell in love with Gujarati woman, half of his age, she broke his heart, left him for…
Ratan Tata, one of India’s most respected business icons and the former Chairman of Tata Sons, led a life filled with remarkable achievements. However, his personal life was equally marked by deep yet unfulfilled love stories. Though he never married, Ratan Tata experienced four “great loves” throughout his life, as revealed in a recent biography by Thomas Mathew titled Ratan Tata: A Life.
In a 45-minute interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire, Thomas Mathew shared details of Ratan Tata’s romantic life, shedding light on the four significant relationships he had. These included two American women, one Parsi woman, and a strikingly beautiful Gujarati woman who was half his age.
Four Great Loves of Ratan Tata’s Life
The American Love That Almost Led to Marriage
Ratan Tata’s first love story began in the United States, where he was working at an architectural firm in Los Angeles. He fell in love with Carolyn Emmons, the daughter of his first boss. The couple was close to getting married, but Tata had to return to India to care for his ailing grandmother. When he went back to the U.S. to bring Carolyn to India, her parents objected due to concerns about the political instability caused by the 1962 India-China war. Sadly, this marked the end of their relationship.
Reviving a Lost Connection Decades Later
Despite the breakup, Tata and Carolyn remained in touch over the years. He revived their friendship and she even attended his 80th birthday celebration in 2017. Mathew revealed that Tata would take Carolyn out for dinner almost every time he was in the U.S., with her last visit being in 2021.
Heartbreak With Gujarati Woman
Another significant chapter in Ratan Tata’s love life was with a Gujarati woman who was reportedly half his age. Mathew describes her as strikingly beautiful, but the relationship ended abruptly when she chose to return to an older boyfriend. This breakup deeply affected Tata, as he had hoped to build a future with her. According to Mathew, this woman is still alive and possibly resides in Mumbai.
Close Bond With Actress Simi Garewal
Though he never married, Ratan Tata was known to have a close bond with Indian actress Simi Garewal. However, they were never officially a couple. Tata maintained his privacy around such matters, always focusing on his work and responsibilities.
Ratan Tata once admitted that he enjoyed the freedom of being single, saying, “Sometimes I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about the feelings of someone else or the concerns of someone else. On other times, it does get a little lonely.” At the age of 63, he expressed that he was still open to the idea of marriage if he met the right person, but it never happened.
The Impact of Family and Childhood
Ratan Tata’s childhood was marked by the trauma of his parents’ divorce when he was just a boy. Raised by his grandmother, Lady Navajbai Tata, he developed a deep bond with her. It was her wish that brought him back to India from America, despite his love for the country. If it weren’t for her, Tata might have settled in the U.S., a place he often said he was fond of.
Beyond his love life, Ratan Tata was deeply committed to those around him. He had a special bond with his staff, particularly his cook, Rajen, and his beloved dogs, Tito and Tango. His compassionate nature extended to everyone he encountered, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
