'Breach of protocol': Former Trump aide highlights 'very telling' Matt Gaetz development

0

A former aide said Donald Trump isn't playing the 4D chess that people think he is. He genuinely wants former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to be the attorney general.

Speaking to MSNCB's Chris Jansing, former deputy press secretary under Trump's administration, Sarah Matthews, said she thinks that all of the opposition is only enshrining his belief that Gaetz is the right person.

"I think that right now all of the pushback that they're seeing from choosing Matt Gaetz as attorney general has probably — is making Donald Trump even more sure that this is who he wants for this job because he doesn't want somebody who is going to please the establishment," said Matthews, noting Trump wants a loyalist more than anyone else.

"He doesn't want an independent [Department of Justice] DOJ," Matthews said.

She also thinks that Gaetz trying to block the report makes it clear it's so damaging he's willing to give up everything to block it. Having Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) intervene is also "a breach of protocol," Matthews said.

"I believe that the ethics committee and the Speaker's Office should be completely separate," Matthews continued. "And so, the fact that he's weighing in now after saying just a couple of days ago that he shouldn't be a part of any of those discussions is very telling. I think that he's getting those marching orders from Mar-a-Lago."

MSNBC reported that Johnson spent Thursday night at Mar-a-Lago, flying back to Washington and landing just after 4 a.m.

Matthews confessed she's amused by those who believe Trump is deploying any kind of strategy, like putting up a crazy nominee so he can come back with someone who looks slightly better and that person will be confirmed.

"That's not what's happening," she said. "He knows that he is drunk on power right now because he feels like he was given a mandate by winning the popular vote, has control of both chambers of Congress, and doesn't have to worry about running for re-election."
