Liverpool Invited to Take Part in Global Meeting on Climate Change

Liverpool City Council’s Leader, Councillor Liam Robinson, has joined the world’s most important meeting on climate change, to talk about Liverpool’s plans to drive down net zero emissions from culture and events.

Cllr Robinson addressed COP29 in Baku via an online link from his Liverpool office, he was the only non-government politician to address the delegates

The recent award of the Accelerator City title to the City of Liverpool by the United Nations was central to the leader’s message to COP29, as he underlined the commitment and focus that the Council has to achieve net zero.

Cllr Robinson told the delegates: “We’re delighted to be named the world’s first Accelerator City for climate action. We know this isn’t just a fancy title – it’s a chance for us to lead the way in creating a sustainable future.

“The designation by the UN Climate Change is a testament to our City’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and its potential to lead the way in creating a low-carbon future.

“Cities are at the heart of the climate crisis. They’re where we live, work and play, but they also produce a lot of pollution. But cities are also the solution. We’re full of innovative people, diverse communities and a can-do attitude.”

Cllr Robinson added: “Later this month we’ll be hosting a three-day event on our iconic waterfront that will be a showcase for a net zero future in the entertainment industry. Three iconic bands will headline, one on each day. British punk band IDLES, the pioneering Massive Attack and the legendary Nile Rodgers & Chic.

“Their performances at the M&S Bank arena in Liverpool will be low carbon and showcase the ‘gold standard’ of smart design in live music events.

“As COP29 looks to establish the global roadmap for net zero, Liverpool is well on the way to taking our position as one of the leading cities in the world on the most important challenge humanity will face this century.”
