Family of OKC man killed in officer-involved shooting receives $1.05M settlement

0

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — The family of Bennie Edwards, a homeless man killed in an officer-involved shooting in December 2020, has reached a settlement with the City of Oklahoma City for over $1 million.

60-year-old Edwards was known to some of the community as "the flower man" for selling bouquets on the street, and had a history of mental illness.

Edwards was shot and killed by Oklahoma City Police officers at a convenience store near Pennsylvania Avenue and Hefner Road after reports that he was bothering people in the area.

Three officers opened fire after he pulled out a knife and ran towards them. Oklahoma County District Attorney Vickie Behenna cleared the officers of wrongdoing in July 2023.

Edwards' family then filed a civil lawsuit, and recently reached a agreement with the city for $1.05 million.
