Iran appoints Alireza Bigdeli as new special envoy for Afghanistan

0

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed Alireza Bigdeli as the country’s new special representative for Afghanistan, replacing Hassan Kazemi Qomi.

According to Tasnim News Agency, the appointment was made by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, who designated Bigdeli as the new head of the Islamic Republic’s representation in Kabul.

The report also stated that the special presidential envoy role for Afghanistan will be eliminated. Instead, as in the past, the special representative for Afghanistan will report directly to the Foreign Minister.

Tasnim noted that Alireza Bigdeli has previously served as Iran’s chargé d’affaires and ambassador to Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, and Turkey.

The appointment of Bigdeli comes at a critical time when Afghanistan faces complex political, economic, and humanitarian challenges. Strengthening diplomatic ties and addressing regional security issues will likely be key priorities for the new envoy.

Iran’s engagement with Afghanistan will be closely watched, particularly as the country navigates its relationship with the Taliban-led administration and seeks to ensure regional stability while addressing cross-border concerns, such as refugee flows and trade.
