Jerod Mayo had no issue with the postgame reaction of Patriots players after New England’s embarrassing loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
The Patriots first-year head coach addressed the rumors after at least three reporters left the visiting locker room at Hard Rock Stadium feeling as if players were unbothered by the contest.
“I don’t question any of that stuff as far as the players taking a butt-kicking like that personally,” Mayo told reporters during a video conference Monday morning. “Everyone in that locker room, we were down. I’m not sure what that report is, I’m not going to talk about that. I know the guys were disappointed.”
“I didn’t get that vibe in the locker room when I broke the team down,” Mayo said on the radio. “I told them how I felt about the game. I’m not sure where that report came from. What I will say is I heard one person, I guess (Vederian) Lowe, smiled during a question. But that’s him — he smiles all the time. Look, we’re disappointed. We’re all pissed off. And we all understand that we have to get better.”
Three Patriots reporters — Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard and MassLive’s Mark Daniels — expressed surprise about the lighthearted locker room after the 34-15 defeat. No player was mentioned by name, but both Bedard and Daniels included Drake Maye as a player who did not present the same playful reaction as his teammates.
