The artwork was purchased by Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun, who outbid six other contenders to acquire it.

According to The New York Times, the sale made the banana the world’s most expensive fruit. The auction, held on November 20, took a surprising turn when Sun, the founder of the cryptocurrency platform TRON, bought it for four times its estimated value.

Artist Purchased It for Just Rs 29

It is interesting to point out that the banana that took centre stage in the art piece “Comedian” supposedly cost a mere USD 0.35 the day it was bought. Placed against a humble blank wall with the help of duct tape, it ended up shaking the art world. Bidding for this unconventional piece started at an impressive USD 800,000, escalating to a whopping USD 5.2 million, and eventually, it was sold for an astonishing USD 6.2 million.

What Is “Comedian”?

In 2019, Cattelan first showcased “Comedian” at Miami’s renowned Art Basel, where it saw three iterations each fetching a whopping price of between USD 120,000 to USD 150,000. Quickly, the installation grabbed eyeballs and sparked off vigorous debates among the art circles about what really defines art. From there on, its journey has been far and wide across the globe, with explicit instructions accompanying it on how to replace the banana when it starts to show signs of decay.
