0

TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center announced the death of Ho Ho the Sun Bear Monday evening.

Ho Ho was born Oct. 19, 1989 at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, according to a news release from the Zoo. Ho Ho was believed to be the oldest Sun Bear in North America. He has been at the Topeka Zoo since 2017, after being at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha.

“Ho Ho brought an extraordinary light to the Topeka Zoo. He was a favorite among staff, guests, and fans across the country. His personality and charm reminded us all why we do what we do,” said Fawn Moser, Deputy Director of the Zoo.

According to the news release, Ho Ho became a star on social media. People traveled from different states to visit him, and even sent him a birthday card on his 35th birthday. Zookeepers made Ho Ho's 35th birthday decorations to fit the presidential theme; as a way to honor his age eligibility to "run for office", according to the news release.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the incredible impact Ho Ho had on the lives of so many. He will forever hold a special place in our hearts and in the legacy of the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center.
