Marianne House

Marianne House is a minimalist home located in Melbourne, Australia, designed by Victoria Merrett Architects. The renovation retains the footprint of the original 76-square-meter cabin-like home, expanding it to a spacious 208 square meters. The design carefully integrates existing elements of the home’s character, such as the large brick fireplace and timber-lined walls, while introducing a functional layout that caters to contemporary needs. The reimagined space features two bedrooms, a lounge, a bathroom, and a study within the original structure. An extension houses the kitchen, dining area, living room, master bedroom, laundry, and an additional bathroom, all oriented to embrace the lush north-west facing garden.

This deliberate positioning connects the interiors to the natural surroundings, marked by Melaleuca trees and coastal grasses. A central courtyard serves as the transitional element between the original house and the new addition. This open-air space brings natural light into the master bedroom and provides serene garden views, reinforcing a sense of retreat. The new wing features high ceilings and a palette of walnut-stained Blackbutt timber that complements the original brick exterior. A vaulted ceiling in the living area nods to the exposed rafters of the old home, ensuring a visual dialogue between past and present.
