Ground stops possible at NYC-area airports amid Thanksgiving travel: FAA

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Ground stops and delays are possible at New York City-area airports on Tuesday amid the peak of Thanksgiving travel, the FAA warned.

The ground stops could be called after 10 a.m. at LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport due to staffing shortages among air traffic controllers and other essential travel personnel, officials said.

A ground stop was issued at Newark Monday afternoon that lasted until midnight, leading to 90-minute to two-hour delays.

More than 18 million people across the U.S. are expected to travel by air between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2, according to the TSA. About 3.2 million people will travel through area airports this week alone, per the Port Authority.

Nearly 80 million Americans will be driving 50 miles or more in the same time frame, according to AAA.
